Time & Mortality

How much of my fear is happening in a future that is not here?

A thought about the future is an event in the present. The future the thought describes is not. Holding those two apart is not a trick. It is an accurate description of what is happening.

A first orientation

Almost all fear about technological change is anticipatory. That does not make it irrational. It makes it a kind of event that can be looked at directly, because it is happening now, where you are.

This question is the quiet center of the map. Most of the other questions lead here eventually.

The distinction

Fused
  • A thought about the future
  • The future
The first is happening. The second is not.
